Special security operation would be launched today to ensure the safety of citizens during Holy Week

Caracas Daily Journal (Jeremy Morgan): Civil Protection Director Antonio Rivero announced that a special security operation would be launched today to ensure the safety of citizens during Holy Week. The operation will involve the deployment of 122,000 officers from the security forces as well as volunteers. Rivero said that the key to the operation would be prevention.

Estimates from the tourism and transport sectors suggest that 14.4 million could be on the move over Easter Week, visisting relatives or taking a vacation.

There's also the expectation that the coming weekend could see a number of public demonstrations. Rivero said steps were being taken to protect public sector buildings and other property.

The National Anti-drugs Office announced that it was installing 74 "control points" across the country to assist the security forces in ensuring "the wellbeing of communities," a statement said.

Restrictions on the sale and public consumption of alcohol also go into effect today and will remain in force until Easter.
