Colombia confirms that an Ecuadorian was killed during an attack on a FARC rebel base on Ecuadorian territory

Colombia has confirmed that an Ecuadorian was killed during an attack on a FARC rebel base on Ecuadorian territory at the beginning of March. At least 20 FARC rebels were killed, including the organisation's second in command Raúl Reyes, in the attack. Rumours that an Ecuadorian was killed in the Colombian attack have been circulating for around a week now and Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa threatened to downgrade diplomatic ties with Colombia should the rumour prove true. In the wake of Colombia's attack on the FARC base, Ecuador and Venezuela both severed ties with Bogotá and Venezuela also sent large numbers of troops to the border area. On Sunday, Bogotá confirmed rife speculation and revealed that the strike on the rebel base was supported by intelligence supplied by the US.
