Lima, Mar 12 (Prensa Latina) Peru revealed on Wednesday that it has asked Venezuela to officially implement "Operation Miracle" that provides free ophthalmologic surgical operations for cataracts and other eye conditions in Peruvian health institutions.
Peru's Foreign Minister Jose Garcia Belaunde said if Venezuela agrees, the government will staff the project from the hospitals where the surgeries will be performed.
Garcia Belaunde told Andina news agency that Peru is willing to expand bilateral cooperation with Venezuela through official channels. The minister lashed out at comments made by government officials, legislators and the media against the Casas del ALBA that refer poor patients to benefit from this project.
Venezuelan Ambassador to Lima Juan Armando Laguna denied allegations of Venezuelan interference by supplying funds to those places.
Operation Miracle is a free eye surgery program for, so far, one million poor patients that Cuban doctors have successfully run in Latin America, the Caribbean and Africa.
