OPEC Set To Support Venezuela On Natural Resource Rights
The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries is set to issue a resolution expressing support for Venezuela's sovereign rights over its natural resources, an OPEC delegate said Wednesday. The move comes amid an ongoing legal dispute between Venezuela and U.S. oil major Exxon Mobil Corp. (XOM). 'OPEC will issue a resolution - or a press release - expressing support for Venezuela to exercise its sovereign right over its natural resources,' the delegate said.

It'd be best of all -- and would empower OPEC immensely -- if the organization sticks together here and does something like freeze Exxon-Mobil out of most or all future contracts, across the board; or at least until Exxon-Mobil 'cried uncle' at any rate. It really would serve these countries best, for them to collectively be able to play off one set of over-bearing imperialist corporations against another set of corporations who are a little more willing to 'play ball' with sovereign countries.
ReplyDeleteHowever, if there's one thing imperialists do best, it's divide & conquer. And there's no more corrupt bunch of people, generally, than leaders of countries -- most especially the OPEC ones.
So we can't really expect much here, unfortunately -- as Hugo Chávez regularly finds out.
