French President Nicolas Sarkozy 'ready' to enter a restive South American zone to help end six-year-old Betancourt kidnap ordeal
French President Nicolas Sarkozy is 'ready' to enter a restive South American zone to help end the six-year-old kidnap ordeal of French- Colombian politician Ingrid Betancourt, his spokesman told AFP Tuesday. 'The president said publicly (on Friday, in South Africa) that he was ready to present himself in person at the border between Colombia and Venezuela to retrieve Ingrid Betancourt, if that is the condition for her liberation,' David Martinon said. 'This possibility was discussed with President (Hugo) Chavez (of Venezuela) during Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner's trip to Caracas (in February). It remains on the agenda,' Martinon added.

Sarkozy is an opportunist and an egomaniacal self-aggrandizer. He shouldn't be trusted for squat -- and no one with any sense does. And frankly, I hope the french working-class overthrows him and his neocon buddies tomorrow. But it would be really good for the FARC to get rid of these hostages too -- all of us understanding that governments also hold hostages. In fact, most all of them -- and the colombian government has much to answer for in that regard.
ReplyDeleteAnd so FARC should hand over this bourgeois lady before she dies on them. 'Bad optics' there, you know. And then Sarkozy will go away with his prize and never look back. And then we can forget about him -- until the workers of Paris storm the Bastille and jam his head on a pike.
