Patrick J. O'Donoghue's round-up of news from Venezuela

President Chavez has reacted very strongly to the death of Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) leader, Raul Reyes on Friday, accusing Colombia of having penetrated Ecuadorian territory to bomb an FARC camp where Reyes allegedly was discussing the humanitarian agreement with rebel units in the area. President Chavez criticized the smiling faces of Colombian Defense Minister, Manuel Santos and Generals as they announced the death of Reyes and other rebels. Chavez says revolutionaries celebrate life and peace, not death and the smiling faces he saw on television he describes as obscene and devilish.

The US government is behind Colombia, the President insists, and on Sunday he ordered personnel at the Venezuelan Embassy in Bogota to return to Venezuela and moved troops to border areas. Ecuadorian President Correa has also ordered troops to border areas as an answer to what he calls the invasion of Colombia. The opposition in Venezuela has given full support to the Colombian government's operation eliminating Raul Reyes who was instrumental in negotiations and operations concerning the release of hostages and considered the FARC's 2-i-C.

Although the Colombian government considers that it is scored a military victory over the FARC, other analysts suggest that it may have backfired and that President Chavez' proclamation that Colombia has become the Israel of Latin America may be a truer reflection of what has happened geopolitically. The comparison between Colombia and Israel was made because the President insists that the US has introduced into the continent the Israeli policy of violating the sovereignty of neighboring countries using the justification of self defense. The President has also pointed out a well known fact that Israeli mercenaries have been training Colombian paramilitaries as part of the general plan initiated by the USA to destabilize neighboring countries especially Venezuela. President Chavez has called on governments of South America to make a statement about such a grave situation but as yet only those involved in the conflict have replied energetically. What is certain is that Colombia and the USA has moved the state of affairs from microphone warfare to a Cold War scenario employing technology and taking advantage of the humanitarian agreement to score military points. Some analysts suggest that the FARC will change tactics and and bring the civil war to the cities.

  1. Who in the world can trust such fascist gangsters as the colombian régime or their oligarchic masters in the U.S., after a monstrous and criminal travesty like this? The colombian narco-régime simply assumes too that the world bourgeois mass-media will be able to spin reality one more time, and effortlessly portray them as the heroes here -- when in fact the gangster reality of these wiseguy thugs is open for all the world to see. Just like Israel in fact, indeed.

This is a perfect example (unfortunately) why you cannot reform capitalism into socialism by voting and/or good faith negotiating, etc. They tried the former in Chile, if you recall (weren't we stupid, huh?). Fact is, these scum will stoop to anything and everything in order to win -- here, by the cynical and murderous subversion of a promising peace process. But if the game is rigged from the get-go -- like everywhere in the bourgeois world, and most especially in the U..S. -- well why not carry on that fun little charade instead, huh? Then they can continue to look smart in an entirely other way.

I'm almost looking forward to the colombians pushing their luck here. Go ahead, punks. Make our day.
