Venezuela will begin a social tourism program for low-income persons

Caracas, Mar 14 (Prensa Latina) Venezuela will begin a social tourism program to Dominica for low-income persons, similar to the project currently carried out to domestic and Cuban destinations, toruism minister Titina Azuaje announced.

Flights to Dominica will begin on March 18 from the Venezuelan state of New Esparta, noted Azuaje in interview with Venevision local channel.

  • Over 3,000 poor Venezuelans benefited from the social tourism program in 2007.

The minister noted that Cubana airline will continue flying to Cuba once a week, carrying 250 Venezuelans in each flight. The low-income tourists stay on the island for seven days, at four and five-star hotels, and paying subsidized prices.

The tourist program with Cuba and Dominica are part of the Bolivarian Alternative of the Americas (ALBA), an integration initiative also including Bolivia and Nicaragua.

  1. Strategically-important undertakings like these should have begun years ago. But better late than never.

Even more important (in an immediate sense) would be getting more activists from the West down to the ALBA countries to interact for more than an hour or two with their like counterparts. Solid, permanent internationalist ties must be built this way.
