Seasoned political commentators agree that Sunday's nationwide United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) elections were "historic" inasmuch as they were the first party primaries ever in Venezuelan political history. The turnout has been described as "excellent" with an estimated 1.5 million turnout (other estimates claim 2.5 million) although with a claimed total membership of some 6.5 million it would imply an abstention rate of between 62% and 77%. The profile of precandidates, however, didn't appear to match Venezuela's challenge ahead in any of the states ... and this is the weakest point.
University of Los Andes (ULA) political sciences & criminology Professor Franz J.T. Lee says: What we suspected realized itself, the political process of institutionalizing a coming coup d'etat is at work already, mainly from within ... all this has very little to do with socialism of whatever century ... of course, everybody is very happy about the immense turn out of turncoats at the voting centers, however, the only ray of hope is Chavez himself. He (Chavez) states that he is crossing the Rubicon (did he read our book?) and he is also giving excellent speeches and now speaks about class struggle."
