Basic Industries & Mining (Mibam) Minister Rodolfo Sanz stonewalls pensioners as hunger strike begins

VHeadline Venezuela News reports: Quoted in today's edition of the broadsheet El Universal, the general secretary of the Venezuelan Guayana Corporation (CVG) worker's union, Juan Gomez says that street protests are planned to protest the lay-off of more than 700 CVG employees, of which 256 will become redundant at CVG headquaters in Puerto Ordaz as of June 30.

According to Gomez, their contracts have ended without any advisory as to continuance, but adds that their dismissal is not seen as being due to any decrease in payroll since foreigners have brought in to replace 50 in the executive.

Gomez lays the direct blame at the feet of Basic Industries & Mining (Mibam) Minister, CVG president Rodolfo Sanz, adding that CVG-Alcasa retirees have begun a hunger strike after weeks of waiting for a response from Sanz to their demands for pension approvals.

The pensioners have set up camp outside the CVG's administrative HQ after being assured ten days ago that they would have an immediate response from Sanz.

"We are always open to dialogue with Rodolfo Sanz, but we will not call off the hunger strike until he is forthcoming with solutions," they say.
