CICPC detectives arrest suspect in connection with the murder of TV anchorman Javier Garcia

Caracas Daily Journal (Jeremy Morgan): The scientific and criminal police, Cicpc, said they had arrested a suspect in connection with the murder of television anchorman Javier Garcia earlier this month. Hours before, they had issued an Identikit portrait, and Cicpc Commissioner Marcos Chavez claimed that the suspect bore "90 percent of the characteristics" of the picture.

The arrest at a hotel in central Caracas appears to have been made as a result of information from the public, perhaps in response to the Identikit portrait of a man Chavez described as between 20 and 30 years old.

The portrait was prepared with assistance from people who may have seen the killer, including a security guard at the apartment block where García lived and was found stabbed to death. The motive and the identity of the murderer have been a matter of speculation ever since.

Interior Minister Ramon Rodriguez Chacin recently said no motive had been ruled out, but also spoke of a "crime of passion" amid rather more guarded statements from the police and coverage from the media.
