Former Defense Minister Raul Isaias Baduel sees power change; November will bring about "a new correlation of power"

Caracas Daily Journal (Jeremy Morgan): Former Defense Minister Raul Isaias Baduel -- once an ardent supporter of President Hugo Chavez but now a frequently outspoken critic -- predicted that the elections scheduled for next November would bring about a "new correlation of power" in the country.

The rearrangement of power would "undoubtedly be favorable to democratic and pluralistic Venezuela," the retired general told Union Radio. However, he warned that this in itself would not provide a "definitive solution" of the country's problems.

Baduel was launching a new book setting out his own "solution" for Venezuela's "crisis and salvation" and he maintained that it would not be possible to convert the national armed forces (FAN) into a politicized entity.

Chavez' critics repeatedly claim that is one of his aims. Baduel also said the country had to prepare itself for the "post-oil" era in the future. Venezuela is estimated to have sufficient oil and natural gas reserves to last for at least 60 years at current levels of production.
