The Venezuela National Electoral Council (CNE) closes Tuesday the registration period of candidates for the November 23 regional elections. The country will elect that day 603 officials, of them 22 governors, 328 mayors, 233 legislative councils members, 13 councilors for the Caracas Metropolitan Council, and seven for the Alto Apure Metropolitan City Hall . The state of Amazonas does not elect any governor because it in 1992 it was decategorized, during the 1989-1993 presidential period, and its electoral synchronicity with the rest of the country has been affected since.
According to CNE official reports, some 2,749 Venezuelans have been registered for the mentioned posts, and 1,066 have already been admitted officially. Of that total, 281 are for 22 governments, 2,382 for mayors, eight for mayors of the Metropolitan District of Caracas and Alto Apure, and the rest for councilors. Not only President Hugo Chavez' followers but also opposition sectors give great importance to those elections to maintain unity among forces. The Venezuelan statesman has announced that his adversaries want to dominate the country's key regions to launch from those places a campaign to remove him before 2013.
