José Miguel Vivanco, the Director for the Americas of NGO's Human Rights Watch (HRW) said on Friday that the decision made by the Venezuelan government to evict him from the country is a government tactic to distract and "elude" the troubles faced by democracy in Venezuela. Earlier, on Thursday morning, Vivanco, along with HRW's Deputy Director, held a press conference where he disclosed and read out a report authored by his organization, in which he denounced weakening institutions and political discrimination in Venezuela. That same day, Vivanco was notified at the hotel where was staying on the move against him and was driven to Simón Bolívar Maiquetía's international airport. There, he was forced to board a flight heading for Sao Paolo. In an interview with TV network CNN, Vivanco noted that the comments made by HRW had been labeled as plotting by the Venezuelan government and "distractive tactic" to elude current problems related to democracy in Venezuela. In a press release issued by Venezuela's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Minister Nicolás Maduro claimed that both Vivanco and Wilkinson entered with a tourist visa and were not allowed to conduct any other activity inside the territory." It is totally false. I am a Chilean citizen and Daniel Wilkinson, our deputy director, is an American. We need no visa to enter Venezuela. What we did, as in any other country, was to fill out the form that queries about the purpose of the trip and there we checked the choice of conferences and labor," he said.
