Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is sending a birthday gift to his Cuban ally, former president Fidel Castro. Chavez is giving Castro a copy of a portrait of South American independence hero Simon Bolivar. It was painted by a retired Venezuelan official. Chavez said Tuesday that the gift is the best portrait of Bolivar he has ever seen. The socialist president reveres Bolivar, whose name he has attached to the 'Bolivarian' Republic of Venezuela and to its armed forces. He renamed Venezuela's currency the 'bolivar.' Fidel Castro handed power over to his brother Raul Castro last February, following more than a year and a half of health problems. He turns 82 on Wednesday.
