Venezuela closes registration on barred candidates

Venezuela has closed registration for candidates running in November's state and local elections - leaving out 272 officials barred from running.
The blocked candidates include key opponents of President Hugo Chavez. They have been marching in Caracas to protest the ban. Venezuela's Supreme Court ruled last week that the decision to bar the candidates was constitutional. Comptroller General Clodosbaldo Russian said the candidates had been suspected of corruption. The National Electoral Commission said Tuesday that 6,248 candidates have registered for the country's more than 200 mayoral posts. More than 500 have registered for 23 state governor positions.
