Patrick J. O'Donoghue's round up of news from Venezuela -- August 11, 2008

President Chavez has welcomed the democratic triumph of Bolivian President, Evo Morales in Sunday's recall referendum. In a communique, the Venezuelan government proclaims the victory as the moment that Bolivia is re-founded. "Once more the truth has triumphed over the campaigns of the Empire ... this victory is a prolongation of the victories of Junin and Ayacucho."

Morales obtained 63.1% of votes and it has been learned that the opposition prefect of La Paz, Jose Luis Paredes lost the recall. The Mayor of Cochabamba says he does not recognize his defeat and calls Sunday's recall referendum illegal. Governors of the half-moon states who oppose Morales also won their recall referendums.

The United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) dedicated the weekend to enrolling candidates throughout Venezuela. While pro-government media sources highlighted the enrolment of Jorge Rodriguez and Aristobulo Isturiz in Caracas, 16 candidates to Mayor's offices in Zulia enrolled their candidacies yesterday. A Zulia state party spokesperson insists that the candidates and primaries have led to greater unity in Zulia. Henry Ramirez and Gian Carlo Di Martino will enrolled on Tuesday for the Maracaibo Mayor's Office and Zulia state governorship respectively.

According to TV talk show presenter, Jose Vicente Rangel, the Colombian secret service (DES) warned President Chavez about a possible attempt against him, if he attended the anti-drugs summit in Cartagena last week. Rangel also claims that the state government of Manuel Rosales in Zulia finances the international office of the Un Nuevo Tiempo (UNT) political party. Rangel states that the office has its staff consisting of a director, deputy director, secretary, phones, Internet and funds for tickets and accommodation.

Agriculture & Lands (MAT) Minister, Elias Jaua has inspected the unit in the port of Puerto Cabello entrusted with receiving and dispatching agricultural machinery from Argentina. Recently, MAT received 33 tractors, 13 harvesters and 63 trucks that will be distributed by the Pedro Camejo socialist company in 13 states. The Minister explains that the machinery is part of an exchange programme for gasoil and that Venezuela has received 500 tractors under the agreement. Pedro Camejo company will provide mechanized service and this year, the Minister reports, it has prepared 100,000 hectares of land for free or at very low cost for small to medium producers.

Wasting no time, opposition politician and current Mayor of Baruta, Henrique Capriles Radonski has enrolled as candidate to the Miranda State governorship. The move comes after main opposition candidate and former State Governor, Enrique Mendoza has been disqualified from running for office by the Comptrollership General of the Republic. Capriles Radonski was accompanied by Primero Justicia party leaders, Julio Borges and Carlos Ocariz and student leaders, Yon Goicoechea and Stalin Gonzalez.
