An investigation has opened into the murder of six people whose bodies were discovered in Quebrada Negra (Portuguesa). The six were natives of Sanare in the neighboring State of Lara. Family members say they disappeared on Tuesday evening after a police operation in the area. Police Detective Branch (CICPC) director, Marcos Chavez reports that police are trying to identify the vehicle used and the persons who participated either directly or indirectly in the murder. It would appear that three people, who were injured at the time and are currently at Guanare Hospital under police guard, will be able to clarify what happened but for the time being the main suspects are Lara State police officers. The Ministry of Foreign Relations (MRE) has rejected outright a resolution of the European Union (EU) Parliament, which, it says, has confused the reality of administrative disqualifications and a decision of the Venezuelan government to expel members of the Human Rights Watch (HRW). The resolution, the communique states, is interference on the part of the right and the extreme right wing euro-deputies in Venezuela's internal affairs. The 51 euro-deputies, who passed the motion, are charged with hiding from public opinion the fact that the administrative disqualifications were placed on citizens charged with acts of corruption. The resolution is viewed as an attack on a "government that respects human rights" and is making an effort to fight corruption and impunity. The MRE insists that the expelled HRW members violated the Venezuelan Constitution, laws and interfered in the internal affairs of the country under the guise of defenders of human rights. The Venezuelan government rejects the insolent defamations of the right wing in Europe, which claims that the government is ready to violate citizens' rights. There has never been, the communique argues, a government in Venezuelan history that has respected human rights more and favored social inclusion. The document also points out that the EU parliament left-wing unitary group, the greens and the socialist group, consisting of 301 deputies, decided not to take part in the voting.
Cuba and the European Union (EU) have renewed development cooperation after five years of interruption. Cuban Foreign Minister, Felipe Perez Roque signed the agreement for Cuba. The European Commission is sending emergency help to Cuba worth €2 million and from 2009 will give 25 to €30 million for rebuilding work after the damage caused by hurricanes. In November, the European Union development director will visit Havana to coordinate aid program 2009. The cooperation is expected to reactivate political dialogue which is referred to as "useful, constructive and respectful" with an open agenda.
Communication & Information (Minci) Minister, Andres Izarra has launched a new initiative called, "The Real Venezuela," which he hopes will be enough to combat the lies and manipulations of private media connected to the opposition. The idea is to break the majority media stranglehold and show the real Venezuela, which consists in people working for the health, culture and welfare of all Venezuelans. Izarra insists that the new initiative will counter the media terrorism enforced by the main private corporations. One of the difficulties confronting the change of direction is to reach the many people that watch the Cisneros Corporation station, Venevision and the private Televen channel and who read one of the many private newspapers. Will it mean that Izarra reverts a bravado decision last week not to supply opposition media with any more advert money? If Minci wants to reach millions of Venezuelans, then drastic changes will have to be made in government propaganda and reach.
