VHeadline Venezuela News reports: After a bitter national hangover from the Olympics in Beijing, Venezuelan firefighters have found lots of gold the the World Firefighters Championships 2008 at Walton Park in Liverpool, England. A delegation of 110 firefighting athletes from the Metropolitan Caracas, Merida and Vargas State Fire & Rescue Services took home more than 70 gold, silver and bronze medals in the games which saw some 3,000 firefighters from 30 countries competing for the title of best in the world.

Venezuelan Fire Captain Rogelio Torres said that the Venezuelan athletes were on form after three months of continuous physical preparation and that the results board showed Venezuela topped only by England, Canada and France.

Every two years firefighting teams from around the world attend the event to compete not only in sports events, but specialist activities such as breaking doors with an axe and/or climbing buildings of up to 46 floors. There are 73 competitions for groups of all ages and abilities ranging from football, snowboarding, boxing, chess, poker, table tennis and even fishing. The heart of the championship is a test called "The most rugged firefighter alive" ... described as a test of strength, endurance and muscle in which competitors must take on challenges such as drag horses, heavy rescue dolls or climbing high walls.

This year Raquel Garcia was the only woman in the Venezuelan delegation ... "it was good to be the only woman, but sometimes it feels like being a tiny ant ... women and men compete on the same tests with the same weights etc."
