Communist Party of Venezuela leader reaffirms relevance of Marxist-Leninism at Karl Marx's grave

VHeadline News Editor Patrick J. O'Donoghue writes: The head of the Communist Party of Venezuela (PCV) international bureau, Carolus Wimmer has given the 2008 Karl Marx oration to mark the philosopher's birthday. The event took place in Highgate, North London where Marx is buried.

Wimmer, who is also a National Assembly deputy and vice president of the Latin American Parliament launched the challenge stating that the 160-year old Communist Manifesto is as relevant as ever as can be seen in Latin America where there has been a reassertion of independence to shake off the new Imperialism.

"The twenty-first century is likely to be known as the 'Anti-Imperialist' Century, marking a growing intolerance with the waning US empire."

Wimmer argues that the so-called death of history in 1989 was a false victory, as Venezuela, Brazil, Bolivia, Ecuador, Nicaragua, Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay are demonstrating today. After 1989, Wimmer maintains, people were not only denied Socialism but the majority did not even enjoy basic peace and much less security.

The occasion, the PCV leader contends, confirms the relevance of Marxist Leninism in the struggle against poverty, despite the mistakes of the twentieth century and assuming the rich experiences and diversity gained.

  • At the end of the oration, delegations from the Morning Star newspaper, the Communist parties of Britain, Bangladesh, Iraq, Greece and Germany laid flowers at Marx's grave.

Wimmer has concluded a short visit to Ireland where he attended a meeting organized by the Connolly Youth and has several speaking engagments in the UK before returning to Venezuela on Thursday.
