Group goes behind the headlines with Chavez
From the valley where Caracas is nestled to the looming mountaintop of Cerro El Avila, the Venezuelan altitude rises a dramatic 9,000 feet. A contrast equally sharp separates the highs and lows of Venezuelans' views of Hugo Chavez, their charismatic and controversial president. No middle ground is apparent. In five nonstop days in Caracas, an American Society of Newspaper Editors delegation heard the most compelling arguments from leaders in both camps — including a 90-minute private audience with Chavez in Miraflores, the presidential palace.
