EFE News Service: Venezuela is offering to build a gas pipeline to neighboring Guyana and Suriname as part of efforts to bolster South America's energy security, Venezuelan Ambassador to Guyana Dario Morandy said over the weekend.
"It is expected that in the medium-term this project will become a reality and, with it, strengthen our ties of integration and economic sovereignty," Morandy said Saturday night at a reception to mark the 197th anniversary of Venezuela's independence.
The Venezuelan envoy also announced that his country had initiated talks with Guyanese authorities to establish a joint-venture company called PDVSA (Guyana) to "guarantee the permanent supply, greater efficiency in transport, timely payment and at the same time to strengthen our relations as sister nations."
Venezuela currently supplies 50 percent of Guyana's fuel needs at lower prices and on generous terms under the PetroCaribe oil alliance. In recent months, Venezuela has offered to build a $2 million home for destitute people and cancelled a $12.5 million debt that Guyana had owed since 1974.
