Just this last weekend, Basic Industries & Mines (Mibam) Minister Rodolfo Sanz had announced a 50/50 partnership with Rusoro in what he described as Venezuela's first socialist gold mining organization.
The facilities have been sealed at the principal gate to the property which remains under strong military custody as unemployed gold miners gathered at the gate at sunrise on Monday morning expecting to be re-hired as part of the agreement between the central government and the Russians. Mining union officials say they were alarmed to find that Rusoro has apparently hired outsiders to work at the mine.
CVG-Minerven president Luis Herrera and other company officials have refused to issue any statement but unofficial sources say as many as 300 union workers could be re-hired today while Minerven continues to give refuse to discuss the allegedly outside recruits.
National Guard (GN) 2nd platoon, Border Detachment 85 troops have also taken over the El Peru mine. Trade union representatives and groups of unemployed miners from Roscio, Callao, Sifontes, Peter Chien and Piar communities were waiting at the gates already at dawn this morning looking for jobs after the Rusoro/Minerven joint venture advertised that it will employ a large workforce after the government's decision to remove the concession from US-Idaho-based Hecla. It is expected that the re-opening of the Isidora mine will give access to given new jobs to.
Meanwhile, presidential security teams have been drafted into El Callao ahead of a major event expected to take place there next weekend.
