World Peace Council resolves to attempt to democratize international organizations

Caracas Daily Journal (Vincent Bevins): The World Peace Council wrapped up its meeting and published its results, ending with resolutions rejecting a policy of foreign intervention and with plans to attempt to democratize international organizations.

The meeting took place on April 9 and 10 in the Hotel ALBA in Caracas, a and counted on the participation of more than 300 representatives from five continents.

Apart from rejecting the intervention of powerful countries in the affairs of others, the group also announced an attempt to democratize the United Nations. Specifically, they criticized the right to veto held by countries in the Security Council.

The group also expressed solidarity with the Southern alliances such as ALBA and MERCOSUR, especially with reference to their ability to provide an alternative to the Free Trade Area of the Americas promoted by President Bush.

With respect to the FARC, the Peace Council expressed its unconditional support for the policy of pursuing a humanitarian exchange and negotiations.
