Patrick J. O'Donoghue's round up of news from Venezuela -- October 10, 2008

President Chavez has launched another attack against his political allies, The Communist Party of Venezuela (PCV) and Patria Para Todos (PPT). Speaking at a United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) meeting in Portuguesa State, the President accuses both parties of failing to rally around his political leadership and pursuing a counter-revolutionary attitude. The President says he does not understand how the parties can back their own candidates and not those of the majority PSUV. Chavez recalls that he has urged both parties to join the PSUV and form one great big party but they have always held back " defending their small spaces" of power. It is worth noting that the government media take on the story omits the PCV from Chavez' blanket condemnation of allies, highlighting only the PPT.

Organisation of American States (OAS) general secretary, Jose Miguel Insulza has taken up the challenge of President Chavez regarding international financial organizations. Insulza insists that new financial organs must be created to avoid the financial and economic crisis affecting every country in the world. The current international financial architecture, Insulza comments, is useless and a new model must include measures to regulate the flight of capitals belonging to investors and savers. Yesterday, President Chavez publicly stated that the International Monetary Fund should be scrapped and members of his Government are calling for developing countries' foreign debt to be pardoned and erased.

State VTV television director, Yuri Pimentel has been summoned to appear before the National Elections Council (CNE) to answer charges that his media channel gave excessive coverage on Sunday to party political activities of President Chavez, allegedly violating electoral regulations. The director of the opposition 24-hour new station, Globovision, Alberto Federico Ravell has also received a summons to appear next Wednesday to answer charges that his media source is biased towards opposition party political campaign activities.

Deputy Foreign Minister Europe, Alejandro Fleming declares emphatically that the European Union (EU) has not condemned to Venezuela for preventing political opponents from running for regional government or for expelling Human Rights Watch (HRW) director, Jose Miguel Vivanco from Venezuela. Fleming points out that what was signed was a working document and not a declaration involving 22 out of 633 deputies of the European Council parliamentary assembly, which meets four times a year and consists of representatives of the national parliaments. The document itself clearly states that "written declaration commits only the members who have signed it." Fleming insists that Venezuela's opposition will continue to fail in its effort to convince other countries to support its view on the political disqualifications.
