Patrick J. O'Donoghue's round up of news from Venezuela -- October 7, 2008

National Anti-Drugs Office (ONA) director, Colonel Nestor Reverol says he does not rule out the possibility that drugs found on a Greek ship are part of a conspiracy plan to discredit Venezuela's war on drugs. Reverol reports that the ship came empty from the USA to load in the Jose storage depot in Anzoategui. Two Colombians have been arrested and the drugs were found in the steering area. In other news the director reports that the National Guard (GNB) anti-drugs command center has destroyed two drug-making laboratories in border areas with Colombia and the army has eradicated two hectares of coca plants.

During a visit to Paris, Foreign Minister, Nicolas Maduro summoned ambassadors and charges de affaires stationed in Europe for a special meeting to review the international situation. Maduro says the meeting has provided the government with an opportunity to adjust mechanisms to advance in Venezuela's great objective of "building a new world geopolitics." The diplomatic personnel also reviewed Venezuela's media output in respective countries and announced a solidarity meeting between Europe and Venezuela on October 25. Maduro ventures that the event will be a great opportunity for men and women representing European moral values to meet with leaders of Venezuela and to be able to "inform their countries about positive aspects of the Venezuelan revolution afterwards." Sources indicate that Deputy Foreign Minister for Europe, Alejandro Fleming is leading the crusade to offset opposition advances in the European Parliament, Spain, France and Portugal.

Opposition candidate to Zulia State governorship, Pablo Perez says he will fight against centralization and will not allow the government to lack respect towards Zulia State with an " invented" ordinance law and refusal to send resources. Perez proclaims that the process of decentralization in Zulia State has already begun and Zulia has become the standard bearer of an iron-resolve, constant and permanent struggle against centralism. A belligerent Perez chides that President Chavez is mistaken, if he thinks that people in Zulia are going to abstain from voting on November 23 " just because he tells them to."

Foreign ministers of South America and the Caribbean are meeting in Rio de Janeiro to prepare for a summit of heads of state to discuss integration and development. The ministers will set the agenda and format of the meeting and undoubtedly, the financial and economic crisis will be top of the agenda as stock markets in most Latin American countries took a dive yesterday after a disastrous day on the main world stock markets. The San Paulo stock exchange in Brazil was interrupted twice after operations fell to 10% and 15% respectively, ending the day at a drop of 5.43%. The Buenos Aires stock exchange was suspended after loss of 11% and ended at -5.9%. The Santiago stock exchange fell 6.2% and Colombia -4.86%.

Despite dropping markets throughout the world in the wake of the international financial and economic crisis, Venezuela's Planning & Development Minister, Haiman El Troudi states that the economy will close 2008 at 6% growth. The Minister maintains that Venezuela's record in dealing with food, energy and financial security has made the economy "quite robust."
