Miners to stage a sit-in demonstration today (Thursday) at the offices of Basic Industries & Mining (Mibam) Minister Rodolfo Sanz

For the second time in two months, small-scale miners from the Raul Leoni municipality in southeastern Bolivar State are to stage a sit-in demonstration today (Thursday) at the offices of Basic Industries & Mining (Mibam) Minister Rodolfo Sanz in Ciudad Bolivar on claims that they are sick and tired of being deceived by unfulfilled promises.

Miners representative Alfredo Villanueva told the local newspaper, Correo del Coroni that a delegation had decided that the demonstration is the only way they believe they can pressure authorities to achieve a solution to their problems.

"Mibam Minister Rodolfo Sanz came on a surprise visit to La Paragua on May 14 and told us that in twenty days we would have a resolution to a lot of things like credits, pensions, retirement benefits etc., but twenty days went by and nothing ... so, if it is necessary today we will stage a sit-in at Mibam until they tell us what what they will do. "

The representative confirms that he and his colleagues want immediate payment of subsistence vouchers doled out during a mining conversion phase in 2006 ... Minister Sanz has made certain promises but, so far, nobody has seen a single cent.

"It seems to us to be a mockery, for Mibam to refuse to respond ... nobody wants to look us in the face and they just play around with our despair," Villanueva said.
