Bush visit tab set at $1.9 million

British taxpayers will pick up a $1.9 million tab to pay for the security surrounding U.S. President George Bush's Monday visit to London. The security operations, involving some 2,000 police officers, concentrate on a large protest set for London's Parliament Square, where 5,000 people are expected to show up for an anti-war rally, The Times of London said. The biggest disruption, however, could from the snarling of Monday morning commuter traffic, with police working out ways during the weekend to minimize the road closures. Even with the high cost and disruptions, the security effort is smaller than that deployed for the visit of the Beijing Olympic flame in April, suggesting, the Times said, that anger at President Bush is not as intense as it was in 2003 when his British visit triggered three days of mass protests.
