The collection of signatures favoring a projected constitutional amendment for the consecutive re-election of public posts ends Tuesday in Venezuela, with more than six million signatures expected to be gathered.
According to the head of the Simon Bolivar Campaign, Jorge Rodriguez, this second round of signature collection concludes today at 18:00 local time (22:30 GMT). The 700,000 signatures collected in only three days of the process add to the 4.76 million in December already taken to the National Assembly, affirmed Rodriguez, who said that over 5.5 millions had been registered until Sunday.
The signatures will be presented to the National Assembly to accompany a second reading of the constitutional project, which would be put to vote if approved there. The request, initially favoring the continuous nomination of the head of State, was last week extended to mayors, governors, and regional legislators.
President Hugo Chavez stated recently over six million supporters would sign in favor of the initiative which, he said, will expand the socialist project he has been heading since 1999.
