US diplomat rejects Chavez allegations of plot

The top official at the U.S. Embassy in Venezuela denies plotting against President Hugo Chavez. Charge d'Affaires John Caulfield says he traveled to Puerto Rico this month for a wedding -- not to meet with opposition leaders as Chavez claims.

Chavez says Caulfield, Venezuelan opposition leaders and U.S. advisers met recently in Puerto Rico to discuss how to prevent a referendum on term limits from passing. Caulfield said Wednesday that Venezuelan officials know he "wasn't at that meeting."

Venezuelans are expected to vote next month on a proposal to lift term limits for all elected officials, including the president. Chavez expelled U.S. Ambassador Patrick Duddy in September.
