Venezuela Parliament Head Nixes Media Campaign

Venezuelan Parliament President, Cilia Flores, denounced the media campaign carried out by channel Globovision, whose owner Federico Ravell distorted the constitucional amendment which today analyzes the legislative in a second session.
At the precise moment when deputies debated the proposal, channel Globovision, she said, is trying to distort the purposes of this debate to confuse the people. The Venezuelan government and its followers have denounced the systematic planned actions of the opposition in an effort to jeopardize the constritutional amendment proposed.

A case exposed here was the trip made by Ravell and other opposition leaders to Puerto Rico on January 8, to meet with officials of the US embassy in the Puerto Rican capital. Local media revealed that a day before the meeting the US Charge D´Affaires John Caulfield, accompanied by the also US citizen Nancy Arek Caulfield, flew to that Caribbean island. On the Venezuelan side also participated Omar Barboza (A New Time), Luis Ignacio Planas (COPEI) Julio Borges (Primero Justicia), Luis Solórzano (Acción Democrática) y Luis Garrido (Bolsa de Caracas). Students David Smolansky Urosa, UCV student leader and Diego Aaron Scharifker Hokman, UCAB Univerity councillor, planned to create conflict in the streets.

These actions are aimed to destabilize and jeopardize the constitutional amendment which according to Chavez followers should guarantee the deepening of changes started in 1999 and will extend democracy by allowing the continuous election of public posts.
