Venezuela Police Investigate Murder of Women's Prison Warden
Venezuelan police announced Saturday that they were investigating the murder of the warden of the women's annex at Tocuyito Prison, 170 kilometers (106 miles) west of Caracas, and of two of her nephews. Gladys Rivero, 47, Rafael Medina, 19, and Luis Villarroel, 18, were shot to death on Thursday as they were returning from New Year's celebrations in the town of San Joaquin, 140 kilometers (87 miles) west of the Venezuelan capital. The three victims were traveling in the warden's vehicle when they were shot at from another car. Police are proceeding under the theory that this was an action of hired gunmen in retaliation for some incident that occurred with an inmate at the women's jail that Rivero has directed since 1986.
