Patrick J. O'Donoghue's round up of news from Venezuela -- October 13, 2008

President Chavez has delivered his most blistering attack on the Communist Party of Venezuela (PCV) yet during a visit to Trujillo Stage on party political activities. Although the Patria Para Todos (PPT) party is included in the condemnation, Chavez singles out the PCV, saying that it stopped supporting him some time back. The PCV, Chavez proclaims, should go its own way because it will disappear from the political map of Venezuela anyway. Chavez declares both parties disloyal and counterrevolutionary because they are moved by "personal interests" and are "dividing the popular forces that support the revolutionary process." Chavez is angry that both parties are supporting different candidates in some states and municipalities. Unlike news rpeorts last week, government media have included the PCV this time round.

Communication & Information (Minci) Minister, Andres Izarra has let it be known that media outlets involved in coup or destabilization plans will not receive a single penny from the government in advertising fees. The Minister says in the past there have been attempts on the part of the government to set up bridges to reach readers of opposition newspapers. Minci communications strategy deputy minister, Mauricio Rodriguez accuses some media such as El Nacional of topping up prices for adverts and insists that government publicity in opposition media is down.

National Assembly (AN) deputy Mario Isea, who heads a special committee investigating recent allegations of coup and assassination plots against President Chavez, reports that there are new elements in the investigation connecting the director of the national broadsheet, El Nacional, Miguel Henrique Otero and the president of Radio Caracas Television Internacional (RCTV), Marcel Granier. The latest allegations are based on a conversation that journalist, Andres de Chene overheard during the wedding of opposition student leader, Yon Goicoechea. Among the alleged plans were to have former diplomat Diego Arria as interim President and former Defense Minister, General (ret.) Raul Isaias Baduel as Executive Vice President. Former UN official, Arria has replied criticizing the fact that he was not called to appear before the AN committee to refute the allegations.

President Chavez has placed the foundation stone on what will be an industrial and refining complex located in Barinas State. The new plant will be built on what was formerly the La Garza and El Cambio farms. The investment costs around $1.2 billion and is expected to be finished in 2014. 1,800 direct jobs will be created as a result.

Celebrating Indigenous Peoples Resistance Day, President Chavez warns that if the opposition wins regional and municipal elections in Zulia, the key State would become an epicenter of coup d'etat and assassination plots originating in the USA. At the moment, Chavez insists Zulia is governed by opposition leader Manuel Rosales, who is running as a candidate for the Maracaibo Mayor's Office. Chavez brands the opposition candidate to the state governorship, Pablo Perez as an "idiot" and "bagman" for Rosales. Under Rosales, Chavez told indigenous leaders, Zulia has become a hotbed of paramilitary groups, narco-trafficking rings and extreme right groupings, pointing out that the CIA has set up an office there. The US plan could be neutralized, Chavez insists, if people in the State vote for revolutionary candidates. According to some polls, Chavez has a good chance of victory.

During a visit to Zulia, President Chavez delivered 3 certificates of communal land demarcation to Warao indians in Monagas and one for the Karina indians in La Florida (Anzoategui). Chavez opened a technical fishing farm for the Anu indians in San Rafael del Mojan (Zulia), where he commemorated the Day of Indigenous Resistance, which replaces the old Columbus Day.
