Venezuela launches 'Socialist Motherland 2008' Army-Navy-Air Force joint exercises off the island of La Orchila

Venezuela has launched 'Socialist Motherland 2008' Army-Navy-Air Force joint exercise off the island of La Orchila in the Venezuelan Caribbean deploying three Russian-built Sukhoi 30 MK2 fighters equipped with X-59 and X-29 missiles from the Luis Delis Valle Garcia Air Force Base in Barcelona, eastern Anzoategui State.

The maneuvers are intended as part of defense and sovereignty strategies by the Venezuelan Bolivarian Armed Forces to test logistics and the level of response in defense of the nation. President Hugo Chavez Frias says the combat aircraft are "in the service of the Venezuelan people to defend its sovereignty."

Three Sukhoi 30 MK2 fighters will each test fire half-tonne X-59 and X-29 guided missiles with a delivery capacity of between 30 and 115 miles at three times the speed of sound. Venezuela currently has twenty Sukhoi 30 warplanes with four more multi-purpose fighters on order from the Russians to complete the Venezuelan fleet.

Operational deployment is under the direction of the Armed Forces High Command as well as Defense chief, General Gustavo Rangel Briceno from a Command HQ sited at the Antonio Diaz Naval Base on La Orchila and is based on specific defense actions to test the first combat missiles to be launched by Venezuela's new fleet of Sukhoi 30 MK2 and to test anti-aircraft response capabilities by a Venezuelan Navy frigate.

The maneuvers are being held with a view to updating and consolidating air-navy operations and to assess operational units in support of naval operations. Units of navy are engaged joint training exercises for the planning and execution of operations to verify the degree of operability and reliability of the OTOMAT weapons system and to evaluate the Sukhoi 30-MK2 defense system and support of the Amphibious Task Force (FTA). The exercises will also help verify coordination with war scenario resistance and the formation of local defense councils in the western and eastern Caribbean naval operations areas, including the Atlantic.
