VHeadline News Editor Patrick J. O'Donoghue reports:
Colombia's consul in Maracaibo, Carlos Galvis has been asked to leave Venezuela for opinions he made about last Sunday's regional elections. The consul admits that he made favorable commentaries about the election of Zulia's new State Governor and Mayor of Maracaibo but complains that the conversation he had with Colombian President Alvaro Uribe's adviser, Jose Obdulio Gaviria was taped and made public illegally, calling it a "violation" and "crime." Speaking to opposition 24-hour news TV station Globovision, the diplomat declares that he is well-known for his views on integration and has had good relations both with government and opposition personalities over the last year.
President Chavez attended a ceremony swearing in the new Mayor of (Caracas) Libertador, Jorge Rodriguez. The President confirms an electoral promise to make Caracas an example of what a Socialist city should be like and has announced that the end of the regional elections marks the third period of the Bolivarian revolution 2009-2019, which, he declares, will be characterised as a revolution within the revolution. The President has condemned acts of violence by opposition groups in Miranda against government social programs and institutions where Cuban doctors are working.
During his speech welcoming the new Mayor of Libertador, Chavez has announced that Mayor Jorge Rodriguez will be a permanent guest at Council of Ministers meetings, along with State Governor of Vargas, Jose Garcia Carneiro. The President reveals that he has authorized the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) and the Venezuelan people to open a national debate on a constitutional amendment to allow the re-election of the President of the Republic for a continuous term. We will do it, Chavez told his followers, and we will show who rules in Venezuela. Addressing allied parties belonging to the now defunct Patriotic Alliance, Chavez tells them that the doors are open but it is up to them to make the decisions that they have to make. Chavez rams home the observation that after November 23, Chavism without Chavez has ceased to exist and those who betray Chavez are political corpses.
Addressing the new opposition State Governor of Miranda, Enrique Capriles Radonski, Chavez calls him a "cynic" and warns him to leave government social programs alone. One of the structural faults of the Bolivarian government, Chavez reveals, is impunity that has been allowed to become a threat and argues that Capriles Radonski instead of assuming public office should be in prison because he is a fascist and coupster.
During his Sunday TV political talk show, former Executive Vice President, Jose Vicente Rangel has warned recently elected pro-government governors, mayors and councilors not to make a mistake. They were voted in to solve problems and not create sterile disputes, Rangel insists, and people expect them to facilitate dialogue among Venezuelans and not permanent confrontation. The politician warns that if they do not live up to that commitment, they will fail.
The National Union of Workers (UNT) has called on the government to investigate and punish those responsible for the assassination of three (3) trade union leaders, Richard Gallardo, Luis Hernandez and Carlos Requena, who were shot dead on November 27 after a visiting 400 workers protesting against the Alpina company, property of Colombian citizens. The Union Central also has complained about police brutality in evicting workers from the factory on the same day. On Friday, angry workers protested in several key points of Aragua's capital city, Maracay and cut off roads linking Aragua and Carabobo states.
State telecommunications body (Conatel) manager, Marcos Hernandez had denied charges leveled by opposition 24 hours TV station Globovision director, Alberto Federico Ravel that an administrative procedure against the station was because it supposedly issued election results before time. Hernandez says that the reason for the measure is that a few minutes after the National Elections Council (CNE) issued the first bulleton in which the state governorship of Carabobo was still inconclusive, Globovision started broadcasting the reactions of opposition candidate, Henrique Salas Feo, who called on supporters to take over the CNE regional office. Conatel accuses Globovision of inciting to violence by broadcasting such messages and thus violating the law of social responsibility in radio and TV.
Interior & Justice Minister Tarek El Aissami slammed newly elected opposition state governors for using regional and municipal police forces to attack the people. The criticism comes after newly elected opposition authorities started taking violent actions against members of communal councils, health centers and government social programs. El Aissami calls on regional governments to manage their victory properly and not to make a mistake with the people who have gained a conscience and will not allow violence to ruin the peace that has been installed under the Bolivarian government. The Minister made the statement during a act celebrating the seventh anniversary of the Police Detective Branch (CICPC).
National Elections Council (CNE) president, Tibisay Lucena has opened an investigation into an attack against the CNE's regional office last week where officials were kept kidnapped for several hours. Lucena states that the occupiers vandalized CNE vehicles in the parking lot.
Even though it was almost forgotten in the heat of post electoral events, President Chavez paid tribute to the November 27, 1992 (27N) movement of military officers who rebelled against the government of the day. Commemorating 16 years of the civilian-military rebellion, President Chavez praised the effort of those who gave their lives to build a new country. The President recalled the event during a phone-in interview on State VTV channel.
