VHeadline Venezuelan News reports: Sunday evening's election results could be a big shock to Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez Frias. according to Argentian Nova News Agency's correspondent in Caracas, Dimas J. Pettineroli, who says it should surprise no one if Chavez' candidates lose in 10 governorships and 120 municipalities in the local and regional elections across Venezuela this weekend.
Pettineroli says that the closure of electoral campaigning yesterday, Wednesday, was normal but "very tense ... the president, the great evangelist for the Bolivarian Revolution that he is, visited three provinces in one day with an entourage of national radio and television, trying to focus the campaign exclusively on his own personality.
Provincial and municipal candidates were swept aside while Chavez attacked the local opposition from his position as Head of State with ultra-virulent verbal attacks and threats to throw opposition candidates in jail. The opposition, composed of multiple candidates and parties that are not strangled by Chavez' "red rag", continued campaigning at strictly provincial and municipal levels, with good results in the published polls.
According to the soundings, Hugo Chavez has already lost in the big cities -- including Caracas, and its key municipalities: Baruta and Chacao. He also faces serious challenges in the provinces, especially Miranda, Sucre, Merida, Carabobo, Tachira, Nueva Esparta, Zulia, Aragua States and the mayoralty of western oil-capital Maracaibo.
Anselmo "Chemito" Brito, who's running as Accion Democratica candidate for mayor of Maneiro, told Nova's Pettineroli that "Chavez will be defeated and we, the opposition, have shown that we will not be cowed by his insane threats." Ibrain Velasquez, candidate for mayor of Marcano, said that Chavez has said the opposition "has many fantasies!" He adds, but it will stage a comeback and win ... this county, Venezuela WILL recover from the (Chavez) Revolution."
- A third force is made up of independents like Oswaldo Martinez, running under his own Juan Bimba (Joe Public) candidacy, who says "many people are tired of the false choice between 'chavistas' and the 'non-chavistas' ... we will demonstrate our substantial electoral power."
The elections have aroused significant international interest, with observers and journalists from all continents already present to witness the elections which are ultimately seen as a plebiscite on Hugo Chavez, himself. Nevertheless the elections are focused on 22 governors, 328 mayors and 233 regional legislators with a total of 17,308 candidates vying for 603 positions. Of that total, 12,703 candidates are contending state governorships, mayoralties and municipal offices in the Metropolitan Districts of Caracas and Alto Apure. There are 4,595 candidacies for state legislatures and municipal councils with a total of no less than 786 political organizations and 295 independent candidates without party affiliation ... 50.25% are men, 49.75% women.
13 councilors are to be elected in the Metropolitan District of Caracas, with eight were selected by name (60%) and five (40%) by party listing. In Alto Apure, seven councilors will be elected: three by name (60%), three by party list (40%) and an indigenous representative.
