Venezuelan election results: 15,312,464 (52.66% of the Venezuelan population) voted for Chavez' new PSUV!

VHeadline Venezuela News reports: Without a doubt local and regional elections last Sunday have changed the political map of Venezuela. In an electoral process that saw democracy in action to decide 603 positions covering 22 governors, 328 mayors (including Metropolitan Caracas and Alto-Apure), 233 state council legislators (8 of them native indians) plus 13 councillors to Metropolitan Caracas and 7 to Alto-Apure

A total 16,945,061 votes were counted nationwide with big changes from 2004 when of the 22 states, only two were in opposition hands while 20 were in the hands of the then-ruling Chavez-backing party, the Fifth Republic Movement (MVR ). Aragua, Carabobo and Sucre states did, however, split from the main body and began to describe themselves as "dissidents" to Chavez rule.

November 23, the new democratic opposition took Carabobo, Tachira and Miranda, while holding on to Zulia and Nueva Esparta (Margarita) garnering 7,782,692 votes or 46.42% of registered voters. President Chavez' new United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) had resounding victories in Anzoategui, Apure, Aragua, Barinas, Bolivar, Cojedes, Falcon, Guarico, Lara, Merida, Monagas, Portuguesa, Sucre, Trujillo, Yaracuy, Delta Amacuro and Vargas States with a total of 9,023,466 vote or 53.82% of registered voters. Abstention was 38.38% of registered voters down 13.16% from 51.54% in 2004.

According to figures provided by the National Statistics Institute (INE) the total population in Venezuela amounts to 29,075,708.

The 17 states won by PSUV amounts to 15,312,464 people (52.66% of the Venezuelan population), while 13,763,244 (47.34%) are in the 5 states won by the opposition .

Opposition wins compared with the previous elections (2004):

Carabobo:
2004: Chavez' parties: 51.25%; opposition: 48.01%.
2008: Chavez' PSUV: 44.48% (-6.77%); opposition: 47.54% (-0.47%).

Tachira:
2004: Chavez' parties: 57.47%; opposition: 39.88%.
2008: Chavez' PSUV: 48.12% (-9.35%); opposition: 49.46% (+9.58%).

Miranda:
2004: Chavez' parties: 51.87%; opposition: 48.12%.
2008: Chavez' PSUV: 45.94% (-5.93%); opposition: 53.27% (+5.12%).

Nueva Esparta:
2004: Chavez' parties: 43.53%; opposition: 51.32%.
2008: Chavez' PSUV: 41.78% (-1.75%); opposition: 57.55% (6.23%).

Zulia:
2004: Chavez' parties: 44.42%; opposition: 54.02%.
2008: Chavez' PSUV: 45.11% (+0.69%); opposition: 53.49% (-0.43%).

In 2004 elections, Chavez' parties won 233 mayoralties, opposition 85 and independents 13 i.e. Chavez' parties held 70.39% of the municipalities against 25.67% for the opposition.

According to preliminary results for the November 23 elections opposition mayoralties had dropped to 62 and Chavez' PSUV dominated municipalities 265 ... an increase of 9.67% for Chavez' allies and a 6.94% decrease for the opposition.
