Patrick J. O'Donoghue's round up of news from Venezuela -- July 9, 2008

The Communist Party of Venezuela (PCV) central committee says the direction of the revolution will be determined by the correlation of forces being built around the process led by President Chavez. Last weekend, the central committee met to hold its 23rd plenary session to debate and fix its strategic position on regional elections on November 23. The strategy will revolve around building a correlation of forces favorable to revolutionary changes within the framework of an anti- imperialist struggle and the building of Socialism. PCV general secretary, Oscar Figuera says the first task is to continue building unity not just electorally but also within a strategic perspective.

Analyzing the situation inside the Patriotic Alliance (AP), Figuera states that the party recognizes that there are sectors of the non-monopolist bourgeoisie who have taken up an anti-imperialist attitude, alongside revolutionary sectors pushing towards Socialism. For the PCV, Figuera maintains, Hugo Chavez continues to be the fundamental factor of the revolutionary process and if the process is to advance towards Socialism, it's vital to mature conditions that usher in a revolutionary collective leadership and raise the conscience of the People to its historic role, which is none other than leading the revolutionary process with the working class in the vanguard.

At a meeting of the Patriotic Alliance (AP) attended only by Patria Para Todos (PPT) and the Communist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), the PPT has reiterated its decision to reach agreements that will clear the way for unity among pro-government forces. The PPT reveals that three phone calls were made to United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) vice president, General Muller Rojas with no answer forthcoming. A spokesman for PPT complains that it has been waiting three weeks for a meeting but remains optimistic that the strategic alliance launched by President Chavez will continue.

Speaking to the BBC Spanish radio service, Ingrid Betancourt says Colombian President Uribe should not have cut short the mediation of President Chavez when he did and criticizes Chavez for using a discourse that closed any possibility of dialogue with Uribe. Uribe did not think about the hostages, Betancourt argues, and he was lucky that he was able to free her and 14 others when he did but there are others who remain in captivity. "We will continue to need Chavez and we need that bridge to be rebuilt." Later, speaking on Radio France International, Betancourt contends that Chavez is the key to future releases because he can tell the FARC things that they will listen to ... Chavez has made them think differently and managed to release seven persons before we were released and can probably get more released ... I believe Chavez is an extraordinary ally for us." Betancourt made the remarks a day after French President Nicholas Sarkozy praised President Chavez for his role in the release of prisoners of hostages.

United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) youth leader, Jorge Amorin says the party is organizing a youth wing. Youth teams, Amorin comments, will be built up from the grassroots consisting of groups of 10 militants integrated in the socialist battalions. Within the battalions, the youth team will debate topics related to the communities, the conclusions of which will be sent on to the national directorate. The age of the youth teams will range from 18 to 28 years. Amorin states that youngsters from the age of 15 will also be able to take part in the teams, as they do currently in communal councils but their status will be that of sympathizers until they are 18 years old. The teams will be set up during the month of July and the idea, Amorin announces, is to create 14,000 teams. The second stage of formation will consist of assemblies of youth in which each team will choose a spokesperson and a delegate to represent the assembly at a founding Youth Congress.
