Executive safe and sound ... found tied up but unharmed at home

Caracas Daily Journal (Jeremy Morgan): Police officers said they had found business executive Eugenio Antonio Mendoza, who had been kidnapped, safe and sound at the ranch where he lives. Apparently, they came upon him as a result of a telephone call he himself had been able to place to the scientific and investigative police, Cicpc.

Cicpc Director Marcos Chavez -- who as far as is known is unrelated to the president -- said that Mendoza had been found tied up but unharmed. He had been kidnapped on Tuesday night as he drove to his homestead at Magdaleno in Aragua state.

The likely motive for the kidnapping has not been disclosed, but it's suggested this was a criminal attempt to extort ransom.

Whether a ransom was paid remains unclear, and neither is there any explanation of why Mendoza was abandoned alone by his kidnappers -- unless, that is, money was handed over.

"The important thing is to determine who the intellectual authors are," Chavez said, meaning the instigators of the crime. "If a gang's involved, the important thing is to disband it."
