Caracas Daily Journal News Briefs -- Friday, July 4, 2008

A light aircraft crashed near Charavalle in Miranda state late on Wednesday afternoon, killing all three people on board. Officials say pilot Jorge Gomez and his two passengers were flying from Tachira state to Caracas when there was some sort of mid-air "inconvenience" with another plane.

Three legal minors and a young man were killed by a group of thugs bent on stealing their motorbikes in Caricuao, west Caracas. Elfren Alcides Contreras, Francisco Padron and Reine Gabriel Pacheco were 17 years old, while Eduardo Jose Bustamente had gotten to 20 when they were all shot in the head.

Auto industry output fell in the first five months of this year to 59,748 vehicles, a decline of 15.5 percent on 70,730 in the same period of 2007. Industry spokesmen blame difficulties in obtaining hard currency for imported components, saying domestic supplies account for a smaller share of input.

A man called Jesus Arturo Osal in Portuguesa state lived up to his namesake by publicly having himself crucified for three days starting on June 23. Reports reaching Caracas say Osal, head of a local ecological pressure group, was protesting against the deterioration of a local water reservoir. He was supported by his neighbors.

Interior and Justice Minister Ramon Rodriguez Chacin, who claims the crime rate's sharply down, said he would open one new jail every 30 days during the rest of this year. He was on an inspection tour of a new facility at Yare II, a notoriously violent prison in Miranda state.

People in a township named after Rail Leoni in Vargas state want to change its name to either one of two indigenous names or Armando Reveron, a painter who died in poverty before his works became famous. Leoni succeeded Romulo Betancourt in the years after the dictatorship was overthrown, and wasn't a bad president.
