A tanker truck loaded with 27,000 liters of caustic soda overturned on the Autopista Regional del Centro on Friday morning, spilling some of its perilous cargo and requiring fire fighters to carry out a cleaning up operation. The truck was traveling to Barcelona, capital of Anzoategui state.

The State Prosecutor’s Office announced on Friday that it had begun an investigation into what happened when a light aircraft crashed near Charallave in Miranda state this week. The investigation by Prosecutor Jose Gregorio Morales Perera will be aimed at establishing the cause of the crash, in which all three people on board were killed.

Jose David Cabello, head of the tax collection agency, Seniat, said that the "base" of contributors liable to Profits Tax had increased by 35 percent compared with 2007, and that revenues had totaled 112 percent of the target.

A mutiny by prisoners broke out at the Santa Ana jail on Friday, apparently sparked by a search conducted by National Guard (GN) troops during the morning. Inmates were reported to be protesting against the slow pace of the courts and a lack of action by the authorities in response to an earlier outbreak of disorder at the jail.

The Supreme Justice Tribunal (TSJ) assembled on Friday to discuss a proposal to remove Judge Maria Elena Garcia Pru from the bench, who has been suspended. TSJ Judge Deyanira Nieves said that a committee made up of the heads of Chambers would issue a ruling. Pru was reported to have been questioned by the FBI in Miami in connection with financial matters.

Five people were killed near the Mohedano bridge on the Autopista Francisco Fajardo. Two people were rescued from the wreck by firefighters and were taken to hospital. One of those rescued died on arriving at hospital, Metropolitan Fire Brigade operations chief Delio Martinez said.
