Caracas Daily Journal News Briefs for Tuesday, July 2, 2008

Star gazers got a bonus when a new “itinerate planetarium” opened for business in Parque del Oeste on Tuesday, after an investment of Bs.F.42,000 (Bs.42 million in old money). It is one of three such centers in the capital, the others being in Caricuao in the west and Palo Verde in the east.

Students could end up not having to turn up and still get away with it if plans being mulled by officials come to fruition. The idea is that instead of crowding into cramped rooms they could do their studies via computer. At last, the ultimate dream of not even having to get out of bed.

School holidays due to start in two weeks' time are sparking a boom in domestic tourism demand with bus ticket sales and room bookings rising sharply. Tourism officials are forecasting an increase in the value of business of up to 24 percent compared with a year before. Mind you, a lot of that's inflation.

Interior and Justice Minister Ramon Rodriguez Chacin announced that a thousand troops from the National Guard (GN) and 500 officers from the state security service, Disip, were to be “sworn in” to start duties under the Safe Route Plan aimed at curbing violent attacks on public transport.

Air Force Commander Luis Jose Berroteran said Venezuela was awaiting delivery of the four last Sukhoi-30 jet fighter bombers from Russia to complete its squadron of 24 of the aircraft. The government was looking at proposals to acquire next-generation Sukhoi-35 fighters, capable of launching missiles 400 kilometers from target, he added.

Mischief it may be, but reports from the Mercosur summit in Tucuman, Argentina, on Tuesday quoted President Hugo Chavez as saying he'd vote for Republican candidate John McCain in the United States presidential elections. Then he condemned the U.S. Fourth Fleet exercises as a “threat.” That’s more like it.
