Patrick J. O'Donoghue's round up of news from Venezuela

Communication & information (Minci) Minister, Andres Izarra has hailed the weekend's Latin American meeting against media terrorism as a major d efeat for the Inter American Press Association (IAPA). The meeting is full proof that freedom of expression is alive and well, Izarra contends, and shows that the IAPA is scratched vinyl record. "We already knew what it was going to say at its Caracas meeting before it even started."

Interior & Justice (MIJ) Minister Ramon Rodriguez Chacin comments that files supposedly discovered on the laptop of slain Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) leader, Raul Reyes have been interfered with. The Colombian government announced yesterday that it had passed the archives to the Venezuela government allegedly showing the latter's connections to the FARC. Any such evidence is hotly disputed by Venezuela authorities who insist that the USA, which is running the Plan Colombia, could change and doctor laptop information at will to discredit Venezuela and the FARC. According to the Minister, it is not the Colombians who are running the advanced technology but the US war on terrorism machine. The Colombian authorities have dismissed charges that any computer would have disintegrated in a bombardment saying the laptop had armored protection. Furthermore, the Minister Rodriguez Chacin argues, the sinister and underhand dealings of Colombian Defense Minister Juan Manuel Santos throws further doubt on the laptop content.

MIJ Minister Ramon Rodriguez Chacin has announced a 42.61% drop in homicides during week 13. The number of homicides in the first week of January was 230, the Minister recalls, and 132 in week 13. Going into details, Rodriguez Chacin points out that more and more States are joining the citizen security plan. Miranda State joined in week 7 declaring 17 deaths and while the figure remains the same, the average this week compared to other weeks has dropped. Vargas State records a 25% drop this week at around 2 homicides a week, and Zulia reports a drop of 33.33% compared to week 12. Nueva Esparta, Lara and Aragua have just joined the security plan. The war on crime includes corruption, Minister Rodriguez Chacin clarifies, and he points to the arrest of an extortion gang in the Social Security Service.
