National Association of Users and Consumers (Anauco) president, Roberto Leon Parilli forecasts that consumers will have serious problems next year because of the drop in oil prices and inflation. Leon Parilli argues that consumers must be more proactive in their defense. Starting with suppliers of goods and services, the businessman states, the task ahead is to avoid a fall in the standard of life. With the world crisis, Leon Parilli argues, shortages and inflation will be the order of the day and the worst evil the consumer faces such is weak legal protection. Consumers must "demand of the Central Bank of Venezuela (BCV) control over inflation and prices."
It would appear that the declarations of both Botti and Parilli are in tune with the opposition's political campaign discourse against the government and an answer to the President's call yesterday to the business sector to invest in key areas such as housing and banking. The only banking group that has responded positively so far is Banco Mercantil.
President Chavez has been to Barquisimeto where he took part in the testing of new trains belonging to the Central-west Simon Bolivar rail service. Even though the stretch from Barquisimeto to Puerto Cabello and Acarigua al ready exists, Chinese engineers have been improving the railroad to return it to action after decades of decline. Accompanying President Chavez at the 10 km trial run between Lara and Yaracuy States were local schoolchildren. The train reached 120 km an hour.
United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) candidate to the Metropolitan Mayor's Office of Caracas, Aristobulo Isturiz claims that Colombian paramilitaries have been active in recent political meetings and rallies. According to the candidate, his party has gathered intelligence and videotapes, which he will hand to the authorities for investigation and monitoring. Isturiz alleges that the same opposition sectors that recruited paramilitaries in an operation that was discovered and aborted by the government are now trying to infiltrate them into pro-government meetings as red motorbike groups.
US-Venezuelan lawyer, Eva Golinger accuses the US government of setting up setting up five "consulates" in Venezuela without the authorization of Venezuela's Ministry of Foreign Relations (MRE). The illegal consulates or "American Corners" are said to be situated in Lara, Nueva Esparta, Monagas, Bolivar and Anzoategui. Golinger states that it is surprising that the meeting places have been functioning for around three years without any permission whatsoever. The lawyer also insists that opposition sectors and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) continue to receive financing from US institutions, such as the National Endowment for Democracy (NED). The number of organizations receiving funding, Golinger continues, is around 300 and among the new recipients are Podemos and Un Nuevo Tiempo (UNT) political parties. On receiving documents backing Golinger's claims, National Assembly special committee president, Mario Isea confirms that they will be incorporated into his investigation and a final report will be presented to the House after the elections on November 23. Isea announces that he has received death threats because of his investigations into an assassination plot and other conspiracies against President Chavez and places the blame for anything that could happen to him on Zulia State Governor, Manuel Rosales and media owners, Alberto Federico Ravell (Globovision) and Miguel Henrique Otero (El Nacional).
Venezuelan Ambassador to the Organisation of American States (OAS), Roy Chaderton has criticized its general secretary, Jose Miguel Insulza for what he refers to as unfortunate, contradictory and unjust declarations about election results in Nicaragua. Insulza expressed concern about difficulties arising from a recount of votes in last Sunday's municipal elections in Nicaragua but Chaderton thinks that the comments showed partiality towards the neoliberal opposition. Going further in his commentary, the Venezuelan Ambassador states that the OAS general secretary has concerns about his legitimate presidential aspirations and for that the reason was definitely distracted. On Sunday, the Sandinistas (FSLN) won 99 of 146 municipalities. According to Chaderton, Insulza's opinions are compromising the OAS and "coincide with the persistent and crazy interventionist policies of the White House." Insulza's declarations, the diplomat concludes, falls within the sphere of recurring errors common to international bureaucrats.
During a visit to Yaracuy State yesterday for a campaign rally with supporters in San Felipe, President Chavez accuses the opposition of showing signs of despair and preparing violence, warning that it could attempt to imitate Nicaragua's opposition by refusing to recognize election results and creating violence. Last Sunday, the opposition in Nicaragua refused to recognize the results of municipal elections and caused disturbances, which ended in the death of three persons. The US State Department followed up issuing a communique claiming irregularities in the elections. At a re-count of votes, the situation stands as the 91 municipalities for the Sandinistas and 50 for the opposition. During his speech, Chavez quoted articles signed by several opposition commentators in Venezuela, such as Orlando Viera-Blanco and Marianella Salazar, attacking the National Armed Force (FAN) as enemy of the opposition.
