Miguel Salazar sets cat among pigeons attacking Vanessa Davies

VHeadline Venezuela News Editor Patrick J. O'Donoghue writes: Colleague editor/publisher Miguel Salazar has set the cat among the pigeons in his recent editorial lamenting the attitude of fellow journalist and financial director in the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), Vanessa Davies.

Commenting on disparaging remarks made by Davies to Las Verdades (The Truths) de Miguel weekly marketing manager and photographer when they visited Davies to request some advert spots for the newspapers, Miguel quotes Davies as saying, "not even a glass of water Las Mentiras (Lies) de Miguel ... for (opposition broadsheet) El Universal, yes, because it gives one the right to reply."

Opening his commentary stressing that it was written with a broken heart, Salazar delves into a bit of personal history and cites fellow journalist, Carlos Batatin, whom he declares, once warned him that the radical Davies would sooner or later veer to the right.

In an immediate reply by a group of pro-government journalists, including Carlos Batatin, Salazar is accused of media terrorism, calumny, discrimination, sexism and lies against their colleague, Vanessa Davies. The offensive article, they continue, is an aggression against the "good name and credibility of revolutionary militants" and aimed at "sowing despair among the people."

Communications & Information (Minci) Minister Andres Izarra has not made any public statement but is expected to issue a declaration condemning Salazar as a loose cannon.

In setting the cat among the pigeons, the veteran left-wing editor/publisher has brought out into the open once more the question of government use of advert-financing that has favored opposition broadsheets and tabloids and effectively marginalizing more independent left-wing newspapers, such as Las Verdades de Miguel.

  • Davies' remarks regarding funding is typical of the position held by many government and PSUV mandarins.

In trying to break the unintelligible and counter-productive government media encirclement and following a declaration from the Minci Minister that no more adverts would be forthcoming for opposition media, Las Verdades de Miguel finds itself accused of media terrorism.

Time to show the Real Venezuela and a review of the people's historical memory.
