Latest reports: CVG officials and the state-owned corporation's vice-president Alfredo Arcila remain in hostage situation!

VHeadline Venezuela News reports:
As of late Tuesday evening, six Venezuelan Guayana Corporation (CVG) officials and the state-owned heavy industry corporation's vice-president Alfredo Archila remained in a hostage situation at the hands of protesting miners demanding long-overdue payment of promised compensation payments for the so-called mining conversion in southern Bolivar State.

It was a second day of vociferous protests at the regional offices of the Basic Industries & Mining (Mibam) Ministry following months of protests from disillusioned miners who were already promised that payments would be made in May.

Miners spokesman Jean Manuel Rojas told the regional newspaper Correo del Coroni that the protest action will continue and the hostages will not be released until the miners have the money (Bs.F 10,000 = US$4,657 each) in their hands ... "until we have the money in our hands, we're not going to call off the protest," Rojas said adding categorically that they have demanded the immediate settlement of the payments from MIBAM executives. "We will not be dissuaded by more promises, it only means another failure on the part of the responsible authorities to honor the commitments they made years ago."

Army Regional Command (TO5) commander, Major General Antonio Felix Velasquez has tried to mediate the conflict with Official Ombudsman, Jose Gomez. Under threat of military action, a commission six miners was appointed to press their demands while others have been retained behind a military checkpoint set up outside the MIBAM regional office on Avenida Libertador.

At 6:00 p.m. Tuesday the six CVG officials, including vice president Alfredo Arcila, were still being held hostage, trapped in an office cubicle without food or water. A Red Cross paramedic was allowed in to check the hostages' health condition, since Arcila is said to be duffering from hypertension.
