Venezuela's new draft Mining Act raises hope for small-scale and artesanal miners to resolve outstanding issues

Small-scale and artesanal miners in southeastern Bolivar State are hoping that the draft of Venezuela's new Mining Act will have taken their observations from a Miners Congress in February 2007 into account before its submission to and approval by the National Assembly (AN) scheduled for later this month or early next.

Miners representative Dallys Figueroa says that he does not understand why, given that all regulatory requirements have been fulfilled, the Ministry of Basic INdustries & Mines (Mibam) has not given local miners the go-ahead as a required preliminary for the state-run Social Development Bank (Bandes) to begin granting loans for mining operations to begin.

Meanwhile, Figueroa is demanding an urgent meeting with CVG-Minerven president Luis Herrera to resolve the problems in liaison with Mibam Minister Rodolfo Sanz and says he expects that the direct result of that meeting will be that all previous roadblocks will be removed.
