Hospital El Algodonal in north west Caracas is working at just 30% capacity as staff moves linked to Barrio Adentro

Caracas Daily Journal (Jeremy Morgan): Hospital El Algodonal in north west Caracas is working at just 30 percent of capacity, according to Maria Yanez, a representative of the Medical Society there. She linked problems at the hospital to a reorganization prompted by the launch last year of the third stage of Barrio Adentro, President Hugo Chavez' program of providing free health services to poorer sectors of the population.

El Algodonal was one of eight public sector hospitals affected by the reorganization, which involves the transfer of staff to other medical centers. Work on modernizing the hospitals should have been finished last year but had still not been completed, she claimed.

Furthermore, she warned that the delay in modernization projects coincided with a growing workload on staff and facilities. Last month alone, 50 cases of suspected tuberculosis had been taken to the hospital for treatment, she said.

The Venezuelan Medical Federation claimed there had been "irregularities" in the system of grants for medical students.
