Venezuela Stocks Rise Slightly in Their First Week of Trading

The Caracas Stock Index rose 0.28% during its first full week of the year with very little volume as most Venezuelans have yet to come back from the Christmas vacation.

Corimón A was the leading gainer rising 7.7% to Bs. 14, Banco Provincial rose 6.2% to Bs. 14.50, Mercantil Servicios Financieros increased by 4.11% for both type A and B issues both closing at Bs. 18.25 and Sivensa rose 3.1% to Bs. 17.47. But the market was dragged down by CANTV shares which dropped 9.5% to Bs. 3.44, the only stock to really fall, but the largest issue in the index.

The market closed the week on Friday at 35,187.85, up .28% for the year. By comparison, the US Dow is down 2% for the year already, the S&P 500 is down 2.13% and the Nasdaq is down 0.34% for the year to date.
