Venezuela Assembly Defines Amendment

The Venezuelan National Assembly started Monday a defining week for the execution of a referendum on a constitutional amendment proposal to enable the continuous re-election of public posts.
The weekly program starts today in a parliamentary commission, which must draw up a draft of the proposal to be voted on January 14, and guarantee the February 15 popular consultation.

The National Assembly must approve the amendment proposal Wednesday or Thursday, with the aim of delivering it January 16 to the National Electoral Council. This entity has a narrow margin of 30 days to organize the referendum. At the same time President Hugo Chavez' supporters reinforce their committees' activities for a Yes, while the opposition confirms an immediate alliance in the so-called Angostura Command to call a vote for a No.

The proposal, presented by legislators of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela, will eliminate, if approved, the limit of two presidential mandates for the posts of President of the Republic, governors, mayors and legislators. This will allow President Chavez to present again his candidature for the 2012 elections, something his supporters term necessary to continue the process of social and economic transformations started in 1999.
