Sister republics -- reconcoliation -- Uribe expresses solidarity with Venezuela

Caracas Daily Journal (Vincent Bevins): In the midst of troubling tensions between Colombia and Venezuela, The Daily Journal received a refreshing communique Thursday from the Colombian embassy.

Among other things, it contains the following quote from Colombian President Alvaro Uribe: "With the sister Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela -- nothing can make us forget that we are brothers, brothers in history, brothers in the present, and brothers in the future."

Venezuelan president Hugo Chávez is unlikely to disagree with these comments, but that does not mean he has retracted his accusation that Uribe's government is working with the United States to prepare a military action against his country.

Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa has recently backed these claims. But Uribe's comments, so eagerly faxed to press outlets around the country, can hopefully be seen as an attempt on his part to cool relations between the countries after they spun out of control late last year.

Regardless of political alliances, Venezuela and Colombia are indeed extraordinarily linked. They used to be the same country, and have extraordinarily close commercial, and cultural, relations.

Uribe's comments took place during a meeting at a business forum, and went even further, indicating that business was a mechanism of solidarity "If we are together in solidarity and we don't even have one pound of meat, we have to share it with our brothers in our sister countries."

  1. Álvaro Uribe Vélez is a liar and a murderer -- not to mention a drug kingpin. His word is meaningless. His intention is only to deceive and mislead, if possible.

Obviously he feels pressure to 'cool it' in his war of words with Venezuela. But no one should take their eyes off this little bugger and his friends for one second.
